сокр NMSНаиболее значительная по общему объему выделяемых средств частная стипендия [ scholarship] для студентов колледжей. С 1955 выделяется абитуриентам по решению некоммерческой Корпорации национальных стипендий за заслуги [National Merit Scholarship Corp.], созданной Фондом Форда [ Ford Foundation], а также за счет пожертвований корпорации "Карнеги" [ Carnegie Corporation of New York] и других компаний и учебных заведений, на основе результатов общенациональных экзаменов, проводимых осенью в средних школах [ high school] страны, а также достижений во внеклассных конкурсах и т.п. Действуют две общенациональные программы: первая ежегодно предоставляет гранты [ grant] 3,8 тыс. выпускникам средних школ; вторая ежегодно предоставляет схожие гранты способным негритянским студентам. Некоторые фирмы-участницы программы выделяют стипендии только детям своих служащих или жителям регионов, где находятся их предприятия.
